New York Alternative Veterans Exemption (RPTL §458-a). Reduces assessed value of primary residence: 15% for wartime service, +10% for combat-zone service, +50% × VA disability rating for service-connected disability. Caps vary by locality. Applies to county/city/town/village/school taxes (school portion only where district has opted in), NOT special districts or special assessments. Important 2026 change: a Feb 2026 amendment makes a FULL property tax exemption mandatory STATEWIDE for veterans with a 100% permanent service-connected disability — effective Oct 1, 2026, applicable to the 2027 assessment roll. Until then the 100% exemption is still locally opted in. Application deadline is March 1 in most communities; file with the local assessor.
